Galeri Petronas

24Dec09

GALERI PETRONAS was established in 1993 at the Dayabumi Complex, the former headquarters of PETRONAS. Its establishment created a major new venue for the display of visual art in Kuala Lumpur. Through the gallery, PETRONAS sponsored many art exhibitions showing works of both local and foreign artists.

The gallery was relocated to its present prime location in the PETRONAS Twin Towers in 1998. The spacious new circular gallery of 2000 sq meters is almost three times the size of the gallery in the Dayabumi Complex. The larger space represents an extension and expansion of activities by PETRONAS in promoting and contributing to the development of art.

GALERI PETRONAS has been designed to be a compact, protective vessel, a conducive environment for the display and contemplation of art. The interior architecture is solid yet understated, emphasising natural geometry in forms and purity in the choice of materials. The beauty of GALERI PETRONAS lies in its simple approach: the abstract expression of planes, textures and materials which marry art and architecture reflecting the very essence of the space.

The gallery has been built and equipped in accordance with international art gallery standards. It is a multi-functional and flexible space which is easily adaptable for art displays and other activities. In this way, the Main Gallery and the Bustle Gallery are able to accommodate a number of exhibitions simultaneously, or to create interesting exhibition layouts.

In addition to a total art display space of 1135.92 sqm, the gallery is also equipped with two multimedia spaces each measuring 30.1 sqm, three dry workshops each measuring 46 sqm, and a lecture room measuring 40.97 sqm. These multi-purpose spaces are used for art demonstrations, forums, classes and lectures, performances and other art activities.

What happens when a hotel is closed down in Kuala Lumpur? We say one word about it and move on with our lives. Well, this production attempts to change that mentality altogether with their own depiction of an impending demolition of a hotel. The various people who call the hotel their home must find a way to move on.

When the hotel comes tumbling down, they have to dig deep within their souls for that elusive light that will guide them back on the right path.

This eye-opening production tells the story of the things we dispose of with barely a second thought – buildings, history and most important of all, people. Essentially, this is the story of those who have been ignored and cast aside by society and giving each of them a voice to make people sit up and listen.

A Light in KL City is a project by the vastly experienced Rey Buono. He is a theatre director, acting coach and performing arts educator and responsible to the founding of many important pioneering programmes. A Light in KL City is just another icing on his very impressive performing arts cake. The production also features music by talented singer-songwriter, Mia Palencia.

Christmas is forever and not just for a day,
for loving, sharing, giving, are not to be put away
like bells, lights and tinsel, in a box upon a shelf.
The good you do for others is the good you do to yourself…

This Christmas, spread the joy of Christmas and ‘Spark A New Beginning’ for Agathians Shelter at The Westin Kuala Lumpur in answer to their plight to acquire a second home for its children.

Do your part by supporting this heart warming cause and purchase a bauble or a lollipop to dress their Christmas Tree at the lobby for only RM50.

Agathian Shelter needs at least RM55,000 to fund the basic necessities of a new home to make the children’s lives an enriching one. Founded in 2003, Agathians Shelter, an orphanage for boys, was set up to save children from being turned out to the streets. For more on info, please visit http://www.agathians.org.
